He described creating his first game Bounce ball thingy as "a fun side project that might even get me a little spending money." It was the experience in developing puzzle games that helped him as he developed Geometry Dash over four months, along with the inspiration from platformer games he grew up playing such as Super Mario Bros. Topala was studying civil engineering when he first started exploring video game development, then with only basic programming knowledge.
